NSW STATE TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS - 04/08/2010

Last Saturday we headed up to Sydney for the NSW State Taekwondo Championships! The event was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre and hosted over 800 competitors.

JOLS were sponsors of the event and also the team of referees, who did a great job.

The competition was tough and intense and the day had a great atmosphere. We would like to congratulate Taekwondo NSW on a great event!

STA VICTORIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS - 29/07/2010

JOLS attended the STA Taekwondo Victorian Open Championships over the weekend (July 25), where around 250 athletes competed in Poomsae and Sparring events. The tournament was held at the Victorian State Netball and Hockey centre.

The day was very eventful and one of the major highlights was the Victoria University Taekwondo Team. Not only did the majority of the team compete in the Male Poomsae (18-30 years) and the creative Poomsae, they performed an exciting demonstration with the JOLS plastic breaking boards.

The team of eight Korean Nationals performed a theatrical demonstration of flips, kicks and stylised martial arts moves. You can watch the video on our Facebook page.

There was a great vibe at the event. Music played throughout the venue, creating a lively feel. The crowd was enthusiastic, especially the members of the competing clubs, who were not afraid to cheer on their team members.

Another highlight was the introduction of the Unalan Cup for the best fighting spirit. This cup was given in memory of Mahir Unalan, who sadly passed away recently and was a well respected member of the Taekwondo community.

Youngster Michael Nyugen took out the award with his impressive form and was given the trophy by event officials.

The next Sports Taekwondo Australia Event is the STA 2010 QLD Open Championships, which will be held on August 22. For more information, visit the STA website.

AKSL TOURNAMENT - 14/07/2010

JOLS was one of the proud sponsors of the Australian Karate Super League tournament last month. As we were unable to attend, we spoke to organiser Jim Dodrill, who gave us a run down of the event.

"The first Australian Karate Super League tournament, held at the Rockbank Sports Complex went very well. We had almost 200 competitors ranging from age five to the over 40 veterans. Competitors, coaches and officials came from as far as Gympie to the north, Dalby to the West and The Gold Coast to the South. Being an open event, all of the main styles were well represented, including shotokan, shito ryu, wado ryu, and goju ryu. The tournament was well run thanks to the many officials, which included a number of AKF state and national referees and judges from both fractions of Queensland Karate.

Some of the notable aspects of the tournament were the relaxation of protective head gear which has become very unpopular in official AKF/WKF events, the high standard of judging/refereeing, the strict enforcement of no contact rules in kumite and the general festive and friendly ambience of the event.

Competition was fierce, yet fair and friendly in all divisions. There were too many great kata and kumite performances to mention. The open kata event saw JKA's Sherry Bower enter the men's division and despite some very talented competition, she ended up standing on the podium with the first place trophy in her hand. The open kumite division was the true highlight of the day, which saw Sunshine Coast resident, Brendan Hancock take first place. Recently turned eighteen, and National Kumite Champion Jordan Butterfield came second and Iran's Hadi Kandjani third.

The feedback at the tournament and since, has been overwhelmingly positive. We are looking forward to the next AKSL tournament on Sunday, November 21st."

2010 NATIONAL JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS - 15/06/2010

As the proud sponsors of the 2010 Judo National Championships, JOLS traveled to Brisbane for the Queen's Birthday long weekend (June 12-14) to be part of the event. The championships were held at the Hibiscus Gardens state Netball Centre in Mount Gravatt.

JOLS supplied the mats for the event and donated some prizes to winners and gifts for the raffle draw.

The event was very well organised and run, and there were many happy medalists. It was great to see the amount of keen volunteers who came and made sure the venue looked great and even stayed on for the clean up at the end.

On the Friday prior to the competition, we arrived in Brisbane to collect the 400 mats that would be used for the event. We had a huge semi-trailer take them down to the venue and then a bunch of volunteers got stuck into the hour and a half process of getting them on the floor. Once they were down, the venue looked great and the championships were ready to get underway.

The two days ran smoothly, with many great matches and tough competition. Our very own Stephanie Grant competed and won silver in her division.

JOLS donated prize money for the open weight event winners. $350 was given to the gold medalists, both male and female, and $150 to the runners up. Along with the prize money, the winners were given a pineapple in true Queensland style.

We would like to thank Judo Queensland for making us feel welcome, and congratulate them on an all around great event.

STEVEN CURRIE RETURNS TO AUS - 03/06/2010

JOLS speaks to Steven Currie about his trip to the 2nd WTF World Para Taekwondo Championships and his journey to Gold!

Steven arrived in Russia a few days before the competition to settle in and begin his preparations. On the day of the competition, Steven woke up at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep.

"I was super excited and nervous," he said.

That morning, he met with his coach, Henk Meijer. Henk was the Olympic Taekwondo coach for the Netherlands at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, and later became National Taekwondo coach for France. In February 2010, he began working as Head Coach for the Greek Taekwondo Federation.

"I warmed up with my famous coach Henk Meijer, who was an absolute pleasure to meet and be coached by," said Steven.

Steven found himself strangely relaxed and calm before his first match. All that changed however, when he walked onto the stadium floor against his first opponent, a Russian.

I began to feel the nausea. I was in Russia fighting a Russian! We started the first round and I recall the mats being very new, slippery and rushing my attacks, as I was nervous," he said.

Henk coached me well, telling me to relax and work on my percentage shots. In the second and third round I gained control. I relaxed and ended up winning comfortably," he said.

Steven took out the match 14-5. His next fight was against Finland, which he won comfortably 18-6.

"Starting this fight, I was much more relaxed and knew I could beat him if I played my game," he said.

Steven was now in the final, but was conscious of his Iranian opponent's tough game, after watching him in the semi-final.

"I became aware of his deadly back kick. Coach Meijer instructed me to fight him with the front foot."

"We walked out onto the mats and I was aware that it was the final- Gold was three minutes away. All my dreams from the last year were about to be decided here and now. I was excited and adrenalin was pumping," he said.

The opponents were tied at five points each after the first round, but Steven gained a two point lead at the end of the second.

"We started the third and all I can remember was my opponent continually pressuring forward and attacking while I was doing my best to counter and stay on my feet. The referee called the end of the round and I was gasping for air but I knew I had won," he said.

Steven's victory makes him Australia's first ever World Taekwondo Champion.

"I was overcome with euphoria and was ecstatic. I had done it. Later standing on the podium felt exactly like I thought it would. All those times I had imagined myself standing there, on top, first place, gold, listening to the Australian anthem."

"My wildest dream has come true. Despite sustaining my injury five years ago, I dreamed I could achieve greatness, I could do something amazing, and all that hard work and perseverance has paid off," he said.

After his amazing achievement, Steven spent five days enjoying St. Petersburg.

"All in all an amazing trip and I can't wait for next year," he said.

JOLS is very proud to have been part of Steven's amazing journey. Make sure you keep following Steven as he writes a Taekwondo blog for us! Read the blog here.

WIN FOR STEVEN CURRIE AT THE 2ND WTF WORLD PARA-TKD CHAMPIONSHIPS - 13/05/2010

JOLS would like to congratulate Steven Currie, the now Under 80kg Para Taekwondo World Champion! Steven is Australia's first ever World Taekwondo Champion.

Steven attended the 1st WTF World Para Taekwondo Championships last year and came away with a bronze medal. He has achieved his goal of improving that result this year in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Steven won his first match 14-5 against a tough opponent, Russia. His second match saw him defeat Finland 18 -6. Steven took the final against Iran easily at 15-9.

We are very much looking forward to hearing more upon Steven's return. JOLS would also like to congratulate Steven's club, Team Carlo, who are very proud of his achievements.

STEVEN CURRIE- 2ND WTF WORLD PARA-TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS - 11/05/2010

JOLS sponsored Taekwondo paralympian Steven Currie this week, fitting him out in adidas. Steven is representing Australia at the 2nd WTF World Para-Taekwondo Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia.

A mixture of passion, hard work and determination has led Steven to where he is today. However, representing his country does not put an end to his long term goals.

Steven got his first taste of Taekwondo at 12 years old and was rekindled with the sport at 21, after some time away.

"I wanted an activity that would keep me fit as well as offer me confidence and the ability to take care of myself in any situation," he said.

"It's been one of the most fulfilling decisions I've made in my life."

Not only is Steven representing Australia for the second time at the World Paralympic Taekwondo Championships, he is looking to extend his passion for Taekwondo with an eventual progression into coaching and instructing.

"You could say it's a second career for me because I take it very seriously. I am eager to achieve my best so I try to think and act like any other professional athlete," he said.

It hasn't all been smooth sailing for Steven, after a motorbike accident five years ago left him with a paralysed arm.

But instead of letting the injury impact on his dreams, Steven seriously contemplated what was important and what he wanted to achieve.

"The accident made me more determined than ever and it took over two years for me to finally grade for my black belt and successfully pass my Advanced Diploma of Electrical Engineering," he said.

"It's challenging being at a disadvantage fighting with one arm, but it's what drives me to succeed. I've proven to myself and my peers that despite my circumstances, I can be competitive in Taekwondo."

So what does he think about representing his country?

"It's the most amazing feeling and such a great honour. Having the opportunity to represent my country in a world event is very exciting," he said.

Steven won a bronze medal in the 1st WTF World Para-Taekwondo Championships last year and is looking to improve on that result in 2010.

"This year I've had more time to prepare so I'm really looking forward to the competition," he said.

"I always try to aim for 100%. Anything less is not high enough. Throughout my life I have been rewarded numerous times by having this attitude."

LIVING THE DREAM- OPENING A DOJANG - 09/02/2010

Chief Instructor - Master Ron Claassens (6th Dan), talks to JOLS about “living the dream" and building his own dojang.

"Most instructors dream of opening their own centre one day - well I've had this dream for 28 years so I've had a lot of time to imagine how it would look.

The purpose of visualization is to see what you want to achieve - I used this in the process of setting up our dojang. Having a very supportive wife helped immensely. After a number of knockbacks from suitable facilities we finally got a foot in the door so to speak, a leaser who gave us set up time plus a few months free rent as an incentive to start the process. The DA through council is the most difficult part of the process when changing use from industrial to recreation. But we stuck with it as the venue was perfect size wise and we could picture the potential.

We started renovating in May 09 and we came to a standstill in Aug 09 due the imposition of fire safety regulations. At this time we had already invested 20K in work and equipment, at one stage we were thinking about backing out as the upgrade would cost up to 40K more.

After much tooing and frowing, the owner offered us another 6months at 50% rent, to make it more viable. We bit the bullet so to speak took out a loan to fulfil our dream.

We have been open for a month now in Brookvale, on Sydney’s northern beaches and a local hapkido school has come in with us to share the burden of the rent. This has made it even more viable and now we are travelling full steam forward.

Our venue Empower Fitness and Martial Arts will be the premier centre on the northern beaches of Sydney fully equipped and matted with sprung floor.

Check out our web page for pictures and details www.imt.org.au. Our grand opening will be on the 27th of February with sword Master Jang cutting the ribbon with his razor sharp jigum and tribal elder Uncle MAX doing a spiritual cleansing of our facility plus demos.”

VALDESI AND BENETELLO HIT MELBOURNE! - 16/12/2009

World Karate Champions Luca Valdesi and Davide Benetello were in Australia this week for their 2009 Australian Seminar Tour.

Valdesi is nine times WKF world kata champion and Benetello is a European heavyweight kumite champion.

The men travelled to six destinations around Australia, aiming to spread the word of karate and give followers an insight to their talents and techniques.

JOLS was a sponsor of the event and donated adidas WKF mitts which were signed by the stars and given away as prizes.

After their Melbourne seminar, the two men dropped by the JOLS headquarters for a quick chat.

Davide and Luca said the tour was going well and they were enjoying the Australian crowd. “Australia is beautiful. This is my fifth trip here, although this is for work, so we haven’t had the chance to do much sight seeing,” Davide said.

Both men said the seminars were a success so far and Davide said he greatly enjoyed the interest and questions from fans. “It is good to see them really interested and asking questions. I love meeting people and helping them improve.”

Luca said his aims went beyond showing people set techniques. “We want to teach people the new methodologies and the mind set. Then we could maybe come back in six months or a year and see how people are using these techniques.”

“We see this as a long term goal, and we will take it step by step. My main aim is to help people wake up their minds. It’s not just about the physical abilities,” he said.

In terms of kumite, Davide said there have been many recent changes occurring in Europe. “There have been big steps taken in kumite, and a lot of new methods. So my main aim is to introduce these to Australia. There are different techniques, control and positions and I am showing the difference between the old and new techniques” he said.

Although the seminar numbers have been varied, the men don’t mind the smaller numbers. “It is very intimate with less people, and the response from those attending is great,” said Luca.

So the plans for the rest of the year? Davide said some family time and relaxation is on the agenda. “We will go home and spend Christmas with our families before next year begins.”

Aside from this, Davide is planning to tour Switzerland and Spain to conduct similar seminars in 2010.

Luca will begin preparing for European Championships in May and the Italian Open before that.

World Grand Master Visits Ballarat Karate Club - 16/12/2009

WORLD Grand Master Kise Fusei Hanshi cast a technical eye over Ballarat Karate Club members in action recently.

The 10th Dan Grand Master arrived from home base, Okinawa, Japan, with his son and successor the 9th Dan Kise Isao Kaicho to celebrate the official opening of the Ballarat Karate Club's new dojo. First time visitor to Australia, Sensei Jerry De Vries (6th Dan) also accompanied the Grand Master.

Kise Hanshi spent an entire week training senior ranks and offering guidance to club members as well as assessing Ballarat fighters and providing hands on teaching during junior classes. The exhaustive process will enable senior instructors of the club to ensure the traditional methods practiced are firmly aligned to the key source in Okinawa.

Ballarat Karate Club opened its first permanent base in Moyle street after 45 nomadic years of training. The dojo has been tastefully fitted out to be one any would be proud to train in. The club operates as an Incorporated body and the high standard of instruction is offered voluntarily. This in itself is testimony to the resilience of the members withstanding the test of time to be stronger than ever in both member numbers and level of instruction at the club. The club welcomes junior girls and boys from age 6 years and above, men and women in senior classes and over 50s in the “Old Warriors” classes.

During the Grandmaster's visit, senior candidates undertook advanced black belt reviews for graduation. Notably, the highest distinction awarded was 9th Dan, presented to
Kyoshi Dr. Barry Packham at the farewell dinner presentation. Also recognized for his knowledge, ability and commitment to the style was Kyoshi Wayne Reddrop who received 7th Dan Black Belt. Senseis Graham Howard and Jack Lyons received 5th and 3rd Dan ranks respectively. The awards are not to be taken lightly, given that graduating between black belt levels generally takes 5 years to achieve at the club; and Kyoshi Packham waiting 20 years for his most recent promotion.

The Ballarat Karate Club is the sole Australian club to practice the Shorin Ryu
Matsumura Orthodox karate style. Over the years, Wayne Reddrop conducted training at a community hall in Creswick, but now, given his role as Chief Instructor focuses solely on instruction at the Ballarat dojo. In 1998, Danny Manning (3rd Dan) began classes as Daylesford, the only other existing venue, recently celebrating 10 years of operation.

Members were honored by the Grand Master's journey to Ballarat for the dojo opening, culminating with an exchange of gifts reinforcing longstanding ties between Australia and the birthplace of traditional karate.

2008 OTU EBP CHAMPIONSHIPS - OCEANIA TAEKWONDO UNION - 08/12/2008

The 2008 OTU EBP Championships were held in Auckland at the YMCA Stadium on the weekend of December 6th and 7th. With teams from the 14 countries of Oceania, it was going to be an interesting weekend.

Most of the athletes were having their first experience with the EBP.
Once they realised that technique was rewarded, their game improved.

Fighters were scoring mainly front kicks, but as the finals got nearer, there were more combinations of head and body shots.

Spectators got involved with a lot of enthusiasm, loudly cheering the fighters.
It was big plus for the adidas EBP. A successful Championships for the EBP.

The Oceania Taekwondo Union (OTU) which endorses the adidas EBP will now use the EBP in all of its competitions.
